Sandy Creek Barge Intake Improvements

Lake Travis, TX
River Authority
Preliminary & Final Design
Quick Facts
  • Raw water floating barge intake located on Sandy Creek arm of Lake Travis
  • Modification or replacement of existing barge to ensure continued potable water service
  • Pumps, piping, electrical, controls, and related facilities required to connect to the existing underwater raw water transmission main

The severe drought conditions in central Texas during 2009 caused diminishing lake levels that, if the drought conditions continued, would impact operations of the Sandy Creek barge.  KFA was retained to evaluate several options and prepare drawings and specifications for the selected alternative.  The final option that was chosen was to shorten the existing Sandy Creek vertical turbine pumps.  This option allowed for continued use of all existing equipment and piping and did not require electrical or control improvements.
